The site encompasses central areas of the Sulkava population centre, which is built on top of a drumlin field. The main site in the area is the monument stone at the marketplace featuring garnet-cordierite-mica gneiss typical to and representative of the Saimaa area.
The stone is multicoloured and richly hued: dark biotites and plagioclase crystals form a base intersected by light quartz and feldspar dikes. The stone is also dotted by grains of dark red garnet and blue-grey cordierite. The stone quarried from the local surroundings and used in building is known as Amadeus.
